Anointing of the Sick

The Church believes and confesses that among the seven sacraments,
there is one especially intended to strengthen those who are being tried by illness, the Anointing of the Sick.

(CCC 1511)

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick is considered a Sacrament of healing.  As a Sacrament, it is one of the ways Jesus assists us in life and offers His divine help.

Any baptized person who is suffering with illness of any kind, or is in danger of death, can receive the Sacrament by a priest.  The faithful who receives the anointing can receive it several times if their illness becomes worse or another serious sickness affects them.  The celebration of this Sacrament should, if possible, be preceded by individual confession on the part of the sick person.

If a loved one is nearing their final hours, please ensure they receive the grace of receiving their ‘Last Rites along with Viaticum.’  Viaticum, the Holy Eucharist, provides spiritual sustenance for their final journey.

Parishioners who would like to receive this Sacrament are to contact the Parish office at 403-251-3381.

If you are admitted to any of Calgary’s five hospitals and wish to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, please call the Diocese of Calgary Call Center at (403) 231-9505. For requests at other healthcare facilities, such as nursing homes and seniors’ lodges and CareWest, please contact our Parish office.

Additionally, our Parish has a Pastoral Care Team comprised of parishioners who are trained to provide home or hospital visits to ill parishioners within our community.

Members of the Pastoral Care Team assist our priests in many ways, including providing the Eucharist to the sick, terminally ill and homebound members of our Parish.  To learn more about the comprehensive support and services by our Pastoral Care Team, please click on the button below for in-depth information.

Families and/or friends of those who are sick are encouraged to contact the Parish Office at 403-251-3381 or email Susan Duckett, the Pastoral Care Coordinator, at susaneduckett@gmail.com as early as possible to ensure timely support and assistance.

“He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two …
They Anointed with oil, many who were sick and cured them.”
