The Church believes and confesses that among the seven sacraments,
there is one especially intended to strengthen those who are being
tried by illness, the Anointing of the Sick.
(CCC 1511)
The Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament of healing through which Christ offers His grace, strength and comfort to those experiencing serious illness or the frailty of age.
The Sacrament may be received by a baptized Catholic whose health is seriously impaired by illness or old age. It may also be received again if the illness becomes more serious or if another serious illness develops. When possible, the celebration of the Sacrament should be preceded by individual Confession.
If a loved one is nearing their final hours, please make arrangements as soon as possible for them to receive the Church’s sacramental care, using the contact information provided below. The Anointing of the Sick strengthens and prepares the faithful as they approach the end of earthly life and the journey toward the Father’s house. Viaticum – the Holy Eucharist received near the end of life – provides spiritual nourishment for this final journey. Together, these sacramental gifts offer the grace and spiritual strength of Christ as the faithful prepare to enter eternal life.
